SAT/ACT Winter Study Plan

While it’s, obviously, tempting to do absolutely nothing over winter break, this time off is a great opportunity to prepare for the SAT and ACT. With fewer assignments, lighter schedules, and a calm environment, students can set themselves up for success once they return for spring semester.

Week 1: Review the Basics

Spend the week reviewing core concepts in math (algebra, functions, geometry basics, word problems) and reading and writing (main ideas, inferences, grammar rules, transitions).

Week 2: Learn Key Strategies

Go through and practice key test-taking strategies, like:

  • Efficient answer elimination
  • Timing techniques for sections

Week 3: Target Weak Spots

Take a diagnostic test and use results to focus on challenging areas. Some common problem areas include:

  • Tricky math topics (word problems, linear equations, and functions)
  • Reading passages
  • Grammar rules like verb tense and comma usage

Week 4: Practice Like It’s Test Day

Take a full-length practice test under real timing conditions. Then, review every missed question and refine timing strategies.

Tips for Staying Motivated

  • Keep study sessions short and focused (even just 20-30 minutes)
  • Balance practice with rests and breaks
  • Mix content review with strategy drills for best results
